Self portrait
Andre Nicolas
My work explores the relationship between what a black artist is and what society thinks he should be; it de-marginalizes the Black artist, and sets aims to set him free.
With influences as diverse as Jean Michel-Basquiat and Blek Le Rat, my work exemplifies both traditional and modern narratives. Every object is used:Recycled clothing,Vintage pieces, paint, metal, concrete, wood, chalk all fused as functional art. To tame the chaos in the mind, to put it in a way for people to understand is the ultimate goal.
I was born in Newark, New Jersey to first generation Haitian immigrants. I have been fascinated by the un-reality of the mind since, the delicate balance between reality and the reality of the mind. What starts out as perceived triumph quickly transforms into a tragedy of greed, leaving only a sense of un-reality and the chance of a new order. There is truly a thin line between Love and Hate, between chaos and order. I have worked in Finance, on Wall St. and have witnessed the web of Debt, and the Doubt it demands. These corporations have taken over. And it's this in-between that inspires my vision, my art.
